Electromagnetic radiation testing, health, design and reporting services for domestic, commercial and industrial clients, Australia-wide.
UHF and WiFi operates mainly in the 2.4GHz range, though some new WiFi’s operate in the 5-6GHz range and even higher.
WiFi at 2.4Ghz, is exactly the same frequency as a microwave oven. Mobile phones were originally designed to work at this frequency, this was then changed because it was thought to be too dangerous. What is also true, is there has been little research done on this issue.
WiFi is a registered trademark owned by the WiFi Alliance. The WiFi Alliance defines WiFi as any wireless local area network (WLAN). By definition WiFi does not use any wires it uses radio frequency technology. In other words radio frequency radiation.
Webopedia defines radio-frequency as any frequency within the electromagnetic spectrum associated with radio wave propagation. It gives the following analysis of the frequencies that make up the electromagnetic radiation spectrum:
Let me explain using some examples:
Power lines operate at 50 to 60 Hz are located in the extremely low frequency range, ELF.
An FM radio for instance operates in the VHF range, usually between 88 and 110 MHz.
Analogue TV operates in the 400 – 600MHz range, Digital TV is in the 600 - 1000MHz range.
Cell phones operate in the range of 880 to 1900 MHz (in the US), UHF and WiFi operates mainly in the 2.4 GHz range though some new WiFi operates in the 5–6 Ghz range.
Many scientists would say no. But then these are the same scientists that not so long were saying that cell phones were perfectly safe, and yet now the WHO is acknowledging that they could be carcinogenic.
These scientists would argue that the power output of a WiFi transmitter Is lower than that of a cell phone. Most home and business transmitters are limited to 100 milliwatts, though this can vary from country to country.
What is true is that the higher you go up the spectrum the greater the potential risk to humans. So on that basis WiFi is potentially more dangerous than cell phones.
What is also true is that there has been very little research done on this issue. So what can we go on?
WiFi works at 2.4 Ghz, exactly the same frequency as a microwave oven. Cell phones initially were designed to work at this frequency, this was then changed because it was thought to be too dangerous.
Electrically sensitive people can actually feel the effects of WiFi.
Yes it is. The big difference between a cell phone and a WiFi router, is that with a cell phone typically the exposures are of a short duration.
With WiFi, once you switch your router on, that’s it, it’s emitting radiation 24 hours a day seven days a week, 52 weeks a year. Your body is absorbing this radiation, even though you may not know it or feel it.
